I see dead people

Imagination and Deluded Parents

“My four year-old can see spirits!”

I was once confronted with the above claim during the course of my paranormal work. It never ceases to amaze me how logic can be thrown completely out the window sometimes when it comes to belief in the paranormal.

Think back to when you were a child. Were you afraid of the dark? Or the monster under the bed? The benefit of adult hindsight tells you this is simply the imaginings of a child who doesn’t fully understand the world and invents and external antagonist to explain their own internal fears.

But picture an alternate reality where your parents not only believed you, but actually became scared of the monster under the bed themselves! Re-arranging furniture, relocating you to another room, calling in “expert” monster removers, or even moving house to escape the monster.

Sounds pretty implausible right?

So why is it, that when a parent (usually ones with airy-fairy spiritualist ideas), is completely willing to believe the word of a four year-old when they tell them they are seeing spirits? Apparently no other proof is required.

It must be true! Quick, call the ghost hunters!

Is it not more reasonable to assume that the child simply has an over-active imagination?

The claim is always made “children are more open to seeing things that adults can’t see.” But where’s the proof of this? As a child of around the age of four I recall seeing a small creature which I could only describe as a gremlin, which would peek around the doorway at the top of the stairs while I watched television.

Is this conclusive proof of gremlins? Of course not! It was my imagination exaggerating artefacts in my peripheral vision while my eyes were focussed on the television screen.

As a sceptic, my views on this matter are at odds with people who have spiritual beliefs, and when it comes to belief I’ve found that logic takes a back-seat.

Video Interview still - Fairfax Media

My Minor Media Manifestation

Last week during an investigation at Kingseat Hospital with the paranormal group I belong to – Haunted Auckland – a team of journalists from Fairfax Media were invited to cover the team for an article.

On Sunday that article appeared in both print and digital media.

Video Interview still - Fairfax Media

Spooks on the rise | Stuff.co.nz

I don’t make any appearance in the print edition, as I got frustrated with the usual fluffing about that occurs whenever the media are around, so I found a quiet spot away from the lights and cameras while the photo shoot was going on, and started getting down to the business at hand, namely; investigating.

After about an hour I was drawn out of my little command centre in a remote corner of the building, and gave an interview, a small part of which is included in the video which appears on Stuff.co.nz. They missed some of my more interesting statements, however they thankfully spared some of the waffle I gave at the end of the interview as I ran out of things to say. Not sure about the lighting angles, but I guess they were going for the “spooky” effect.

I am somewhat disappointed that Asylum Paintball – who operates out of the Kingseat maximum security buildings – did not get a mention. They have been both patient and generous with allowing us to use their facilities on three occasions, and deserve recognition for turning what would otherwise be a dilapidated hulk of a building, into a exciting and fun-filled centre of activities.

In the end, mercifully I was not directly named in either the print or digital articles (although my name does pop up briefly in the video) so I may only be known as “that big bearded ghost-hunter guy”. While I’m very proud of the team and the media coverage we get, and I’m certainly not at all ashamed of the work we do, my purpose has never been to become a famous paranormal investigator. In this case, I think I’ve side-stepped the fifteen minutes of fame yet again.

Great Scott! Marty, I've become one of those Google Glass-holes!

In which I address the lack of posts… You won’t believe the reason!

Ha! You fell for my blatant click-baiting! But now that you’re here…

Actually the only reason for my lack of posts in the last couple of months is; a) there was no interesting weather happening and, b) I didn’t have anything interesting to talk about.

It’s well into 2015 already, the future of the 1980’s has arrived (at least as portrayed in Back to the Future II). We do have hoverboards and crappy 3D movies, but no flying cars, power laces or fax machines in every room. Since it’s been 25 years since the end of the 80’s, I’ve been marking the occasion by listening to solely 80’s music on Spotify so far this year. Ah, nostalgia.

Aside from revelling in the future past (or possibly the past-future), I began a new job in December after the rather sudden restructuring at Vodafone disestablished my role and made me redundant. (Thanks for the payout Vodafone! Now if you’d kindly stop emailing $0 bills for my old staff mobile account, that would be grand.) My new job has meant a change in industry after 13 years in telecommunications, to working in insurance which I know nothing about. Luckily my role is contact centre performance analysis, which requires only a vague knowledge of insurance, so I get to do what I do best; making turning giant steaming piles of fresh data into nice shiny Excel reports. After two months in the job I’ve already developed and rolled out two (and a half) performance dashboards for my Retail Network bailiwick, plus another for a department I don’t look after. So far they seem to have been well received.

"Briggins, this report you wrote is a real keeper. Unfortunately, you're not"

Redundancy in a nutshell.

This year is potentially going to be a busy one on the paranormal front. Although most of that I need to keep under wraps until matters eventuate, so watch this space for updates. I am also back on the dieting bandwagon since the start of the year, having decided that eating my way into a heart-attack is probably not a good plan. I am doing my own variation of the 5:2 intermittent fasting diet, whereby I “fast” (drop my dietary intake by 75%) on Tuesday and Thursdays each week. The rest of the week I have a system of tracking macronutrients (protein, fat and carbs) against targets 20% below my calculated BMR for my body mass and height, so in theory I should be loosing weight even on my non-fasting days. Approximately 3.5kgs down so far, however my calculations show I will need to keep this up for around two-and-a-half years in order to get to a more reasonable weight. My previous dieting attempts have only lasted a few months, so we’ll see how this pans out.

Not sure if I really lost weight, or the scale is just trying not to hurt my feelings.

Mmmmmm… Deep Fry’d Memes…

In any case, I’ll see if I can some up with a more regular posting schedule to keep my 0.65 regular readers satisfied for updates. I may try syndicating in some articles on topics I find interest to supplement my own infrequent posts. We shall see what the future holds…
